Recess sets another record!

Tuesday the Hub set a new record during 3rd recess–89 student visitors! Our students particularly love the board games, the cartoons, and the computers–and most have done an incredible job of only speaking English and asking for help to say anything they do not know how to translate.20150313_142111

Students love the board game Clue.

20150313_142129The Disney channel show “Gravity Falls” is a big hit with the elementary school boys. They come back to see another episode (in English of course) every afternoon, even though there are no subtitles! Continue reading Recess sets another record!

Students Enjoy Final Recesses in the Hub

Students from various grades visited the Hub during the last two weeks. Younger students loved the TV programs and games, and the older students prefered using the computers upstairs to watch various English-language programs of their choice or play a variety of games.  We are looking forward to seeing them again in 2015!

2nd Graders Invited to the Hub by 7th Grade Class

7th graders from Miss Poli’s class worked all last week to prepare the Hub for a visit from a 2nd grade class for the very first time. They prepared some great games and activities and helped the younger students practice their English. The 2nd graders and 7th graders both had a great time, and both of them had the chance to hear, speak, and read in English in a fun environment.

One group of 7th grade leaders created their own game that combined Headbandz, Pictionary, and Charades.

Students and Teachers Celebrate Final Classes with Games in the Hub

What better way to finish off a great year of improving English than by playing some fantastic board games in the English Hub? That’s what several 7th-11th grade teachers thought during the last week of classes. They brought their students to play popular US board games from “Settlers of Catan” to “The Game of Things.” See if you recognize some of the games in the pictures below! 20141126_08452620141126_121334 20141126_091814We were also thankful for a visit from a volunteer from the USA, Ms. Tara, who is a language teacher from Minnesota.  Continue reading Students and Teachers Celebrate Final Classes with Games in the Hub

Games Build Vocabulary and Communication Skills

Seventh grade students from Ms. Poli’s class played a variety of fun games in the English Hub last week in order to practice vocabulary sets from past units, and improve their communication skills. Some had to ask for their “paydays” as they played the game of LIFE, while others traded Monopoly properties. They also needed to describe words without using certain phrases (think Taboo), and did a great job. They were also joined by two volunteers from the United States!

Students play lively games in Hub

Students from various grades have enjoyed some of the fun games the hub has to offer with their English classes. The games ranged from the iconic Monopoly, to the new smash-hit board game Settlers of Catan, to “Salad Bowl”–a fast-paced combination of Catchphrase and Charades. These games provide a great chance for practicing vocabulary and speaking skills, and are also a ton of fun!
