Operativo Social of the stundents of 10 th grade

On April 24th and 25th the students of 10 th grade had their “Operativo Social”, that took place in the small town of Culipran, Melipilla.

In the company of their 12 th grade mentors and their teachers, our students repaired 13 houses of very poor people, to protect them from the rain and the cold of winter, completing a community service activity with some of the poorest people of the society.

This experience was very beautiful, because all the students had the chance to share with different families that had completely different lives. Also they had the possibility of having a moment of reflection and meeting among themselves.

Vatican confirms Pope’s visit to Cuba in September

Pope Francis will visit Cuba before starting his US tour the last week of September, with the intention of strengthening the historical relationship.
Pope Francis, who was instrumental in reconciliation between the US and Cuba, will make a stop in La Habana before their scheduled visit to Washington, where he  will be received by President Barak Obama on September 23.
Francis’ visit to Cuba ends a long strategy of the Catholic Church in its essential elements shared by the Castro regime to end the isolation of the island due to the action of the United States.

New student council

The first week of April started the campaigns of the two lists that were postulating for the student council 2015- 2016. The members of the list 1 were; Pablo Contreras (President), Sofia Pavanati (President), Barbara Allue (Secretary), Eduardo Mendoza (Treasurer), Raimundo Castillo (RRPP) and Maite Andonegui (RRPP). Their slogan was “Levantate” (wake up). List 2 was composed of; Tomas Paci (President), Maria Jose Cornejo (President), Camila Fuchs (Secretary), Lucca Battaglia (RRPP), Antonia  Morande ( RRPP) and Rodrigo Cañas (Treasurer), their slogan was “Cambiar para trascender” (change to transcend). The election was on Friday the 17th but no list was elected so this Monday we had the second round, where list 1 was the winner. Now the new CAA is List number 1. Congratulations to the two lists, and good luck to the list one in this new excaa2perience!

The increase in the use of drones

Drones are little flying machines that have been used during the last year to take photos or videos from the sky.

They became very popular in 2014 and it seems that this increase in their using will maintain during this year.

They can be used for a lot of things such as movies, photos, sports, and so on.

I think this is a great tool for everyone interested in the world of media and also it facilitates the professional work of many people so it is great that their use is increasing along the time.

Recess sets another record!

Tuesday the Hub set a new record during 3rd recess–89 student visitors! Our students particularly love the board games, the cartoons, and the computers–and most have done an incredible job of only speaking English and asking for help to say anything they do not know how to translate.20150313_142111

Students love the board game Clue.

20150313_142129The Disney channel show “Gravity Falls” is a big hit with the elementary school boys. They come back to see another episode (in English of course) every afternoon, even though there are no subtitles! Continue reading Recess sets another record!

Social Media Campaigns Launched

Our social media presence has already more than doubled from last year! Students in the elective English courses are managing Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook accounts for the Hub. Please give us a “Like” or “Follow” and enjoy updates about the English Hub and fun information in the English language throughout the year.

The Hub is ready for 2015!

new year prizesGet ready for a great new year in the Hub! There are some exciting changes waiting for students tomorrow, including a new weekly raffle, some USA state flags flying proudly over the computer lab, and additional upgrades.

This year students will be rewarded for participating in the Hub, and also in their English classes, with raffle tickets. Every Monday, a winner will be drawn to select one of the fantastic prizes, imported right to Chile from the USA. Features include stickers, books, comics, and candies you can’t find in South America.

The Hub also looks better than ever. New shades will help the projectors look great at any time of day, and the new wheels on the moving furniture will help us set up the room in even more creative ways. Your two US-American teachers are also proud to display their home-state flags in the Computer lab–which has also been equipped with air conditioning! Over 100 books and audio CD’s have been added to our library, and students may now check out these resources to take home for one week at a time if they wish. new year 1

Can you spot the new air conditioning unit?

Finally, for the first time students from all grades will be invited to spend 3rd recess in the Hub to enjoy a variety of activities thanks to some extra help from English department teacher.

We can’t wait to see you this week and throughout the rest of 2015!

High School Students Study for Final Tests in Hub

Various high school students chose to study for their finals this week in the Hub. Even though they were required to speak in English, they did a great job explaining core concepts in Biology, Physics, and Math to one another and to Mr. VanderZee. Ms. Sonia even asked some of her brilliant physics students to teach her some of the problems, and they gave an exceptional Physics lesson using the glass walls of the Hub–completely in English! A few words may have been invented until Mr. VanderZee helped by looking them up (do you know how to say “Foci” in another language??)… but the students were very, very impressive.

Good luck to all of them on the results of their final tests, and here’s to an amazing summer of rest for these very hardworking students.

Students Enjoy Final Recesses in the Hub

Students from various grades visited the Hub during the last two weeks. Younger students loved the TV programs and games, and the older students prefered using the computers upstairs to watch various English-language programs of their choice or play a variety of games.  We are looking forward to seeing them again in 2015!
