Budding Film Critics Respond to “The LEGO Movie”

9th grade students from Ms. Andrea and Ms. Sonia’s classes enjoyed the blockbuster hit LEGO Movie last week. Here are some of their reviews!

Everything is Awesome (5/5 stars)

By Andrés Contreras and Clemente Saez

As the movie was starting, what I could only think about was “oh, great, just another childish, typical movie,” but as the movie started developing its story, you could appreciate that the move as a whole has a completely different style than others, not just the plot, but the message it tried to give. It mixed an awesome comedy with an extremely serious question that can come up in our minds in everyday life: “Why do we do things?” For example, the movie begins with a regular ordinary construction guy, who never questions anything the instructions require, although it’s exaggerated, most people could identify themselves with this behavior of our society. Most times we don’t decide to act because of our own ideas, but because of others.

Following this line, this film also talks to us about how the perfection needed by the adult person (personified as Lord Business) dorwns the free thinking and creativity of childhood (Master Builders). By the end of the movie you can observe how we must recover a part of our imagination, which will help us not only to be happier, but to communicate better with our fellow children.

A Recommendation for the Family (3.5/5 stars)

By Matias Echeverría and Catalina Mandicla

Our personal opinion about “The LEGO Movie” is that it is entertaining, funny, and directed to young audiences. It tries to send a message that is not very clear at the beginning, but then you really can get an idea out of it. It is like a critique to closed-minded people or the ones who try too hard to fit in, by promoting teamwork, self-confidence, and creativity.

It is also a good movie for parents to spend time with their kids. It also promotes diversity.

We thought it was ironic that the movie was against instructions and directions when that’s what LEGO does with their products, but maybe they were trying to come back to the origins of the brand when everything was about creativity. However fiction versus reality was not well achieved, and that why it deserves less than 5 stars.
