Two Vampire Crab Species Found, Are Already Popular Pets

 National Geographics said…

“Vampire crabs, so named because of their glowing yellow eyes, have become popular as pets, but the origin of some of these spooky-looking crustaceans has been cloaked in mystery.

Until now.

Now researchers have traced the freshwater crabs back to their wild source in Southeast Asia—and report that the two most sought-after species are new to science.

The newly described species, Geosesarma dennerle and Geosesarma hagen, were found in separate river valleys on the Indonesian island of Java

“These crabs are kind of special because they’ve been around in the pet trade for ten years, but no one knew where they come from,” said study co-author and professional aquarist Christian Lukhaup of Waiblingen, Germany.”

One student who survived the massacre tells his story in this story from NBC.

The tragedy reminds some of the famous massacre of over 100 student protesters in Mexico City before the 1968 Summer Olympics. In that case, the government sent secret police to fire at the protest and covered up the crime for years.

Some people hope a new director will make serious changes, because this event was only one of several problems with the Secret Service in the last few years.

Ebola reaches the USA

A man infected with Ebola is being treated in Dallas, Texas. He recently returned to the United States from Liberia. This is the first case of the disease outside of West Africa. It took doctors two days to recognize that he had the deadly virus, which means other people might have been exposed. However, there is no need for panic, according to the Center for Disease Control. Ebola spreads by contact with bodily fluids from someone who already shows symptoms. Because of the quality of education and healthcare in the US are much better than West Africa, where ignorance about germs and a very slow medical response have allowed it to spread.
