2nd Graders Invited to the Hub by 7th Grade Class

7th graders from Miss Poli’s class worked all last week to prepare the Hub for a visit from a 2nd grade class for the very first time. They prepared some great games and activities and helped the younger students practice their English. The 2nd graders and 7th graders both had a great time, and both of them had the chance to hear, speak, and read in English in a fun environment.

One group of 7th grade leaders created their own game that combined Headbandz, Pictionary, and Charades.

5th Grade Boys Plan Ultimate Frisbee Tournament

Miss Pauli’s 5th grade boys had such a good time learning about the popular American college sport of Ultimate Frisbee that they decided to host a tournament for one of the last recesses of the year. There were some minor confusions about the rules, but everyone had a great time on a hot, sunny afternoon.

Students and Teachers Celebrate Final Classes with Games in the Hub

What better way to finish off a great year of improving English than by playing some fantastic board games in the English Hub? That’s what several 7th-11th grade teachers thought during the last week of classes. They brought their students to play popular US board games from “Settlers of Catan” to “The Game of Things.” See if you recognize some of the games in the pictures below! 20141126_08452620141126_121334 20141126_091814We were also thankful for a visit from a volunteer from the USA, Ms. Tara, who is a language teacher from Minnesota.  Continue reading Students and Teachers Celebrate Final Classes with Games in the Hub

10th Graders Use Hub for Final Presentations

The 10th grade students in Mr. Garfield’s class used the Hub to present their final project–an investigation about a particular sub-culture. The selected topics ranged from hippies to hipsters, and the presentations were humorous, informative, and very well researched. Great job 10th graders!

10th Graders Prepare for TOEFL

Last week, Mr. Garfield and Ms. Maca’s 19th grade students spent two hours preparing for the TOEFL in the hub.  20141121_092615 Even though they usually complain about the boring practice exercises in their TOEFL prep book, students agree that they feel more relaxed, more interested, and more alive when they work in groups in the Hub. 20141121_094956 20141121_092554They took advantage of the large inviting space with the large glass walsl for writing, and even a “break station” where they could read a magazine or book, or even play a game. 20141121_092629 Continue reading 10th Graders Prepare for TOEFL

Games Build Vocabulary and Communication Skills

Seventh grade students from Ms. Poli’s class played a variety of fun games in the English Hub last week in order to practice vocabulary sets from past units, and improve their communication skills. Some had to ask for their “paydays” as they played the game of LIFE, while others traded Monopoly properties. They also needed to describe words without using certain phrases (think Taboo), and did a great job. They were also joined by two volunteers from the United States!

Biology Students Visit Hub to Research Evolution

On Monday, 11th grade Biology students from Ms. Ana Tapia’s class researched examples and evidence of evolution, using a variety of audio-visual web resources, including documentaries, high-resolution photographs of fossils, university web pages, and scientific articles. Below, read some of their reports, and check out the pictures!

“The mammoth DNA supports the theory of Darwin because the mammoth homoglobin has adaptations that make it much better ar surrender oxygen to the blood at cold temperaturas than the hemoglobin of the mommoth’s close living relatives, elephants. That may have helped mammoths survive the extreme climate of their very cold environment.”

Students use organizers in the hub to write exceptional paragraphs

10th graders from Ms. Melo’s class visited the hub to work on writing well-organized paragraphs. They completed a graphic organizer to write a sentence in groups, and then designed their own organizers to match their topics.

Here are some pictures and samples of their excellent work–some chose serious themes, and others are quite funny!

The PSU system, in which Chilean students are selected to enter at different universities according to the scores they get, is a really bad method. In the first place, they determinate every teenager’s future, at a very early age in which is impossible to know what they want to do with their lifes. Secondly, it doesn’t measures all of the habilities people has, such as helping or advicing poeple, or others like running, strenght, dancing or even painting, which may be really important for some persons. Finally, because of the difficult that this test has and the importance the society has given to it, many students get really stressed and freak out at the moment of doing it, that they can’t express all of the knowledge they truly have. Therefore, PSU isn’t a good method to select students and it should be changed.

Students play lively games in Hub

The games ranged from the iconic Monopoly, to the new smash-hit board game Settlers of Catan, to “Salad Bowl”–a fast-paced combination of Catchphrase and Charades. These games provide a great chance for practicing vocabulary and speaking skills, and are also a ton of fun!
