Budding Film Critics Respond to “The LEGO Movie”

9th grade students from Ms. Andrea and Ms. Sonia’s classes enjoyed the blockbuster hit LEGO Movie last week. Here are some of their reviews!

Everything is Awesome (5/5 stars)

By Andrés Contreras and Clemente Saez

As the movie was starting, what I could only think about was “oh, great, just another childish, typical movie,” but as the movie started developing its story, you could appreciate that the move as a whole has a completely different style than others, not just the plot, but the message it tried to give. It mixed an awesome comedy with an extremely serious question that can come up in our minds in everyday life: “Why do we do things?” For example, the movie begins with a regular ordinary construction guy, who never questions anything the instructions require, although it’s exaggerated, most people could identify themselves with this behavior of our society. Most times we don’t decide to act because of our own ideas, but because of others.

Media, Marketing, and Advertising in Society

10th graders in Mr. Garfield’s class spend some time reflecting on the way advertising affects people in society, especially women. They also watched some interesting videos from the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty (here and here).

Here are some of the students’ insightful reflections:

How many times have you done something that might make you thinner? Have you ever stopped eating despite you’re starving?

Nowadays there are pictures of female bodies in the TV, magazines, internet, social networks, almost everywhere, which sell different products. The actresses are becoming younger, taller, and thinner. Why are standards of beauty being imposed on women? Because the majority of women magazines have at least one article promoting weight loss, diet, excercise or cosmetic surgery in it’s cover, and this is all based in the economy. This articles just promote more insecurities about your bodies and encourage girls like you to loose weight, even if you don’t need to. This in linked to unhealthy eating habits, depression and loss of self-esteem. Stop comparing yourself with the rest of women!! You will never look like the girl in the magazine. The girl in the magazine doesn’t even look like the girl in the magazine.

Women’s Soccer

By Catalina Polanco (9th grade)

Why is there such a difference between women’s and men’s soccer?

It´s a fact that man have more physical aptitudes to play this sport, but women should not be discriminated just for being who we are. Currently in United States soccer it´s not played by most of the men, they prefer other sports like basketball or baseball, girls are the ones who practice more.

In Chile´s schools there are not many opportunities to play but there are other places when you can play it even professional, but those that do it are seen as unfeminine women so most of them are actually ashamed of it.

Students Give Opinions about School Uniforms

This week, students discussed their feelings about school uniforms. Here are the best student comments:

“Yes [students should wear uniforms] but maybe they could be a little different between students , due to the lack of expression that the uniform gives us. For instance, in American Private schools students get different choices, for shirts, ties, shoes, etc… There is a uniform code but its not as strict as the one that we have here.”

-Máximo A.

“I said no, but , if every person wears what they want it can be a mess so the school use the uniform just to control that”

-Augustin G.

“Students should be able to choose from different uniform options, as well as Max said, in many schools from other countries, this is something very common. Although uniforms give the school a great and respectful “identity”, it’d be fun to try something new.”

-Martin B.

“No, because the uniform is repetitive, it would be more entertaining, not always be uniform, we should occupy street clothes, and when important events take school uniform.”

-Maria Jose V.
